Assembly Instructions
Components:
3 Closed Wall (these components plus the Escape Wall form the vertical side walls of the trap)
1 Escape Wall (has an opening for the mandatory escape opening)
2 Frame (these components cap the top and bottom openings of the trap)
1 Lid (forms the top of the trap, and has an opening through which the funnel is placed)
1 Stone Crab Funnel – specially sized opening to accommodate the stone crab, and minimize by catch of other invertebrates (ie spiny lobster)
2 Latch
2 Rubberized Hinge
20 #6 x 3/4 inch Stainless Steel Screws
1 Heavy duty plastic garbage bag
?? Feet of 5/16 trap line with pre-attached weight five (5) feet from the bouy end. Length depends on your fishing depth.
1 Six (6) inch Bouy
Tools for Assembly:
1 Rubber Mallet (preferred) or standard construction Hammer
1 3/16 in. drill bit (for pre drilling holes to accept screws)
1 Electric Drill
1 Philips type Screwdriver
1 Escape Wood- 6 inch x 2 inch x 5/16 inch wood (to enclose Escape Opening)
1 Sixty (60) pound bag of Construction Cement
Water
Step 1 – Locate the Escape Wall. Assemble the Escape Wood onto the smooth face of the Escape Wall opening using two (2) screws
Step 2 – With rubber mallet, assemble three (3) Closed Sides by adjoining the tongue and groove joints of each side. Ensure the smooth faces of the sides are fashioned so they form the exterior of the trap, and orient the sides such that the three (3) extrusion pegs on each side are oriented on the bottom.
Step 3 - Assemble the Closed Side construct (3 assembled sides) and the Escape Wall via the tongue and groove joints. Ensure the Escape Opening is located on the upper side of the trap.
Step 4 – Locate the two (2) Frame components and press them onto the top and bottom openings of the trap wall construct.
Step 5 - Place the lid onto the top side of the trap.
Step 6 – Place the pre drilled Latch onto the top frame enclosure so that when rotated it will move into the recessed area on the lid, thus locking the trap. While holding in position, pre drill a hole with the 3/16 inch drill bit, and secure the latch to the top frame enclosure with one screw. Repeat on opposite side.
Step 7 – Locate the two (2) Rubberized Hinge components and place them approximately three (3) inches off center on either side of the Lid opposite the Latches) covering the joint between the Lid and the Frame. Pre drill, and place screws through the hinges on both sides of the joint to secure the hinge to the frame / lid.
Step 8 – Drop the Stone Crab Funnel into the opening in the Lid, and secure with four (4) screws.
Step 9 – Place the heavy duty plastic garbage bag on a flat, hard surface (i.e. driveway, hard ground, etc). Place the crab trap onto the bag, and open the lid. Carefully follow the manufacturer’s mixing instructions (not too much water!) to ensure a strong concrete product. Prepare approximately 20 – 25 pounds of the concrete mix and pour into the top opening of the trap. The concrete should fill approximately two (2) inches of the inside of the trap, forming the bottom base and integrated weight of the trap. Allow concrete to cure for twenty four (24) hours.
Step 10 – Holding the trap line, note the position of the pre assembled weight approximately five (5) feet from one end (the “short side”). Assemble the float onto the“short side” end of the line, and secure with your knot of choice, leaving a loop for easy grabbing with a boat hook.
Tie the opposite end onto the top corner / latch side of the trap, using your choice of knots (I use a bowline knot).
Step 11 - Affix remaining screws at the top and bottom corners of the trap, using one screw per corner, approximately one inch from either side of the corner.
